Why Use Deadbolt Locks

06/27/2015 Back To Blog

Locksmith Alvin suggest having deadbolt locks installed when you have a limited budget but are looking for an effective security alternative. There are plenty of security services that would love to convince you that they have the greatest and most effective high security available today. This may be true but what do you do when you can’t afford the cost of this type of high security? Having a deadbolt lock installed is a great option because it continues to prove to be the most effective against home invasions. A deadbolt lock has a long steel bolt that is inserted in the doors strike plate. This secures the door, making it more resistant to break-ins.

Parts and Types of Deadbolt Locks

Why Use Deadbolt LocksThe three main parts of a deadbolt lock is the cylinder, bolt and strike plate. Each plays a very important role in securing your door. The cylinder is where you will place your key. The bolt is the actual part of the lock, which secures the door to its frame. It is typically made from a sturdy metal like reinforced steel. The bolt will go at least an inch beyond the edge of the door when it is locked. The strike plate is positioned inside the door frame, this is what is used to secure the door within the frame. The strike plate should always line up with the deadbolt or it will not be ineffective.

The two types of deadbolts that you will have to choose from are the internal and surface mount lock. Even though the installation of the internal deadbolt can be somewhat of a challenge, it provides greater security against burglars. The internal deadbolt is secured inside the door, which allows the bolt to enter into the strike within the door itself. On the outside, there is a key lock with a latch. The surface mounted lock is less difficult to install but offers a significant amount of protection. This type of lock connects the door to its frame by using a bolt. On the outside is where the key entry and deadbolt lock are located. When the key is used, it will lift up the bolt from its case and unlock the door. The inside deadbolt uses a latch to unlock the door. Both types are highly effective. When you use a professional locksmith service, you’ll be able to gather additional information about the effectiveness of each type.
